IMF Code of Conduct for Visitors to HQ
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is committed to being a convenor of open dialogue on its policies and the advice it provides to member countries. To ensure the IMF’s facilities are safe and inclusive, visitors to IMF buildings are required to uphold the IMF’s core values of integrity, honesty, inclusion, respect, excellence, and impartiality, and adhere to this Visitor Code of Conduct.
This Code of Conduct applies to all IMF buildings. Visitors who do not comply with this Code of Conduct may be asked to leave and could be restricted from accessing IMF premises in the future.
- Orderly Conduct - Visitors will always adhere to orderly conduct and instructions on event participation and access, ensuring a respectful and professional environment for the benefit of all participants and building occupants. Any form of verbal or non-verbal disruptions to this professional environment are prohibited as is the display or carrying of placards, signs, spray cans, banners or other protest material.
- Respect for:
a) Individuals – All visitors will treat individuals with respect regardless of differing opinions. Personal attacks, verbal abuse of any form or harassment1, as defined in the Fund’s Harassment Policy1, will not be tolerated.
b) Property - All visitors will treat property with respect. Damage to property is prohibited and punishable by law.
c) Security and Emergency Services Personnel - All visitors will comply with instructions from security and emergency services personnel, allowing them to carry out their duties without hindrance.
- Compliance with the Law - All visitors will adhere to local, state and Federal laws. Illegal actions are not permitted. Visitors will not carry firearms, other dangerous or deadly weapons, or explosives either openly or concealed on the IMF’s premises.

1 Under the Fund’s Harassment Policy, harassment is behavior, verbal or physical, that unreasonably interferes with work or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment. The Fund’s definition of harassment also includes sexual harassment which is defined as any behavior of a sexual nature that is unwelcome, offensive, or that creates a hostile or intimidating work environment.
