Assessing members’ external positions is a core IMF mandate. It is conducted comprehensively in Article IV consultations as well as in the annual External Sector Report (ESR), which provides a globally consistent assessment of external positions of 29 systemic economies, representing over 85 percent of global GDP. This talk will explain how staff employ state-of-the-art models and take into account country-specific factors to produce credible, transparent and multilaterally-consistent external assessments. Based on the assessments, the Fund provides policy recommendations to address global excess imbalances in a growth-friendly manner and from all the membership.
