Emerging economies’ typical age-pyramid shape is changing. Rising income levels, technological advances, and wider healthcare coverage have contributed to longer life spans. A good thing! People are also having fewer babies. These demographic trends carry a bad side effect: public pension and healthcare spending pressures are mounting. Such pressures can become ugly, in the absence of prompt corrective measures to bridge pension and healthcare funding gaps. The talk will discuss these pressures and introduce a simple toolkit to help users assess the fiscal implications of these demographic changes, as well as alternative reform scenarios.
